HWCDSB hosts FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Hamilton Qualifier

In Hydro Dynamics, the FIRST LEGO League’s (FLL) Challenge of the 2017/2018 year, elementary school robotics teams will have a chance to drink in science, technology, math and engineering as they learn everything about water.

Eighteen FLL teams from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board will converge on Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School for the FLL Hamilton Qualifier on December 9th from 8am-5pm, while another nine teams will travel to St. Catharines for the FLL Niagara Qualifier on Saturday, December 2nd.

Through different yearly challenges, FIRST encourages kids to think like scientists and engineers to solve a real-world scientific topic. This year’s Hydro Dynamics project mission challenges teams to consider alternate solutions to how we find, transport, use and dispose of water.

In a 3-step process, teams are asked to identify a problem involving hydro dynamics, design a solution, and share their results before a panel of judges. Each team must then design, build, and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® before competing on a table-top playing field. The robot has exactly 2.5 minutes to complete its mission. All of this is completed while practicing strong team work skills that the team will demonstrate in front of another group of judges.

In addition to STEM, robotics offers a number of learning outcomes, says Superintendent of Education Morris Hucal. “Not only does it incorporate a number of functions, but it crosses over a number of disciplines to engage students with a wide variety of interests in a shared task.”

Participating teams in this year’s Hamilton and Niagara events include: St. Kateri Tekakwitha Kateribots and Shebots; St. Luke RoboLazers; St. Thomas WildBots; St. Agnes Dragons; St. Joachim Jags; St. John the Baptist SJB; St. Gabriel Rolling Thunder; Canadian Martyrs; St. Patrick Rover Clover; St. Lawrence Hydrobots; St. Joseph Jaguars; St. Brigid Dragons; St. Francis Xavier St. FX Bots; St. David Dragobots; Holy Name of Mary Electric Eagles; Guardian Angels; and Our Lady of Peace Eaglebots; St. Ann Hamilton; St. Michael RoboAngles, Immaculate Conception All Stars; St. Martin of Tours Robotics; Our Lady of Assumption Falcons; St. Augustine Roboteers; Sts. Peter and Paul Panthers; St. Matthew Robostangz; and St. Clare of Assisi Cougars.

The top three teams from both tournaments will advance to the Provincial FLL competition on March 23, 2018 at the University of Waterloo.
