A Baby Gaels Basketball Skills Development and House League Program is scoring big with Grade 1-8 girls from Cathedral feeder schools.
“With the program now finishing its sixth consecutive year, the girls who began the program in Grade 1 are now junior players and the progression of their skills has been remarkable,” says teacher and convener Helena Porco.
Launched in 2012, Baby Gaels provides elementary girls from Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board inner city schools a chance to play an organized sport at no cost. The program runs for 12 weeks and offers both house league play and skills development from experienced coaches.
Each participant receives a Baby Gaels T-shirt along with a basketball so they can practice the skills learned each week.
The purpose, says Porco, “is to deliver excellent basketball and life skills which has also built these girls self-esteem through the power of sport.”
The Baby Gaels would like to sincerely thank the HWCDSB for its immense support and the volunteers who give their time each week to assist with the program. A special thanks to Coach Brian Humes who has shared his knowledge and love of basketball to develop these eager and talented young girls.
