School is out for summer which means Focus on Youth summer camps are in full swing across the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board.
With 19 different camps to choose from, whether the arts, sports or Indigenous culture, Focus on Youth camps were created to provide "high quality summer program opportunities for children and youth in identified HWCDSB neighbourhoods."
Made possible through a Ministry of Education grant, the Focus on Youth summer camps are offered free of charge to approximately 360 elementary students in the HWCDSB and employs approximately 75 high school students.
At Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Elementary School this week, a Cultural Arts Camp is giving young artists an opportunity to create their own one-of-a-kind masterpieces.
Led by Site Supervisor Julia Krulicki, students explore basic elements and principles of design while being introduced to influential Masters.
Looking at the famous Andy Warhol, Krulicki used colourful construction paper and paint to help students recreate pop art. By bridging art concepts with hands-on activities, she ensures the camp is not only fun, but educational.
In addition to having a specific focus, Focus on Youth also offers students wellness workshops, literacy, numeracy and science challenges, field trips and guest speakers.
